La_eu Site Project. A Shared Website Platform

La_eu is a shared, open source Drupal codebase built specifically for local Drupal associations. Using this shared foundation, any association can set up a modern, professional website and adapt it to their own needs without building from scratch or maintaining a solo codebase alone.

Rather than reinventing core functionality every time, associations start from a solid base that is actively developed and maintained by a European community of peers. When one association solves a problem, like integrating a member directory, improving the event calendar, adding multilingual support, that solution becomes available to everyone.

Why organizations choose La_eu

Why organizations choose La_eu

The practical benefits are real: shared development costs, no need to duplicate effort, and a codebase that stays up to date because multiple associations have a stake in keeping it healthy. But beyond the technical side, La_eu also means joining a network of people working on the same challenges you are. The associations using the platform are the associations building it, through open coordination meetings, a shared backlog, and a governance model where every participant has a voice in what gets prioritized next.

How it started

Stichting Drupal Nederland redesigned drupal.nl and, rather than keeping that work to themselves, made the codebase available for others to use and grow. France was the first to adopt it for drupal.fr, which went live in 2023. At DrupalCon Lille that same year, a Birds of a Feather session turned the idea into an international workgroup and the project has been growing since.

The ecosystem currently includes associations in the Netherlands, France, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Turkey, Spain, Belgium, and Finland. When Drupal Association Finland launched drupal.fi, they became the eighth European group on the shared codebase. The project is supported by NEDA and co-maintained with Drupal e.V., with technical implementation support from Lemberg Solutions.
